    Firefighting and Medical Services

    Gerald embarked on his venerable career in public service by joining the Contra Costa Consolidated Fire Protection District as a volunteer reserve. His dedication to saving lives and properties propelled him to further his expertise, graduating from Paramedic school in 1984 and immediately joining American Medical Response as an Emergency Paramedic. The following year, he made a pivotal move to the Fremont Fire Department, becoming a part of the inaugural team of firefighters/paramedics that pioneered integrating medical services with fire response.

    His ascent within the department was rapid and well-deserved, and he eventually rose to the position of Fire Captain/Paramedic. Gerald’s roles expanded to include Operations Staff Captain, managing essential programs that benefitted the fire department and the community. After retiring from his formal role, his passion for public service didn’t wane; he continued contributing as a firefighter at the Foresthill Fire Protection District, where his seasoned leadership and guidance were crucial to the agency’s development.

    Diverse Roles in Public Safety

    Beyond firefighting, Gerald’s resume boasts a plethora of roles that underline his versatile capabilities. He served as an EMT for Pomeroy Ambulance Services before advancing his career with American Medical Response as a paramedic. Over a decade, he was a familiar presence at the Concord Pavilion, adeptly handling emergency care at large-scale events.

    One of Gerald’s significant career challenges was his role as a communications specialist for the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) California Task Force 4. This position saw him deployed to major national disasters, requiring quick thinking and effective communication under pressure. He later served as a Division/Group Supervisor for a Type 3 Incident Management Team, coordinating efforts in response to hurricanes and wildfires across the United States.

    The Oakland Firestorm in 1989 and the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1991 were particularly formative in Gerald’s career. They tested his skills and resilience under extreme conditions, solidifying his resolve and commitment to his field.

    Additionally, Gerald shared his wealth of knowledge as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course instructor at various hospitals throughout the Bay Area, further impacting the community by educating others in lifesaving techniques.

    Passion for the Outdoors and Fitness

    With his retirement from full-time public service, Gerald has not slowed down. His love for the outdoors and physical fitness takes many forms, from hiking and mountain biking to snow and cross-country skiing. He is also an avid motorcyclist and racer, participating in numerous off-road and Enduro events across California and Nevada, including the challenging Virginia City Grand Prix and Tecate Extreme Enduro.

    His dedication to maintaining physical strength and health extends into bodybuilding and advocating for the ketogenic diet, which he credits with helping him maintain energy and muscle mass. Gerald’s approach to fitness is based on the principle of living one day at a time and setting practical, achievable goals.

    Racing and Resilience

    Racing has been Gerald's lifelong passion, giving him an outlet to challenge himself and hone his competitive spirit. His racing endeavors are not just about the thrill and adrenaline but also about learning and applying the discipline, mental toughness, and resilience gained from the sport to other areas of his life.

    Giving Back to the Community

    Gerald’s dedication to service extends beyond his professional life. He has been actively volunteering with the US Forest Service and participating in fundraisers for various causes, including muscular dystrophy. His commitment to community welfare is evident in every endeavor he undertakes.

    Currently, Gerald is focused on developing a social media platform to inspire men over 60 to lead active, healthy, and empowered lives. He aims to leverage his experiences and insights to encourage others to adopt a lifestyle of strength, health, and vitality, embodying the discipline and resilience he has practiced throughout his life.
